Secrets To Bumping Up The Intensity Of Your Outdoor Walks!

It was great to wake up the second day in a row to sun and melting snow.  Personally I become a hermit in the winter so this is really my favorite time of year.  I love it when everyone starts venturing outdoors again to walk, clean up the yards and in my neighborhood get the boats ready to hit the water!

It is also time to start stepping up your workouts so that you can wear shorts, sleeveless shirts and swim suits : )  I enjoy walking around my neighborhood, but find it hard to truly get in a good workout just walking.  I do have a couple secrets to bump up the intensity while walking and here they are:

1)  Bring along a jump rope and at the end of every block jump rope for a minimum of 1 minute.

2)  Walk for 3 minutes and do walking lunges for 2 minutes.

3)  When you approach an incline run up and walk down a couple of times before moving on.

4)  If you pass a park like I do, stop and do pull ups on the monkey bars, step ups and push ups on the park benches.

5)  Wear a heart rate monitor and make sure you do what it takes to keep that heart rate in your range.

If you live in the Barrington area Fitness Together will be starting a FREE COMMUNITY walk/run club in April on Saturday mornings.  This club will run through August.  Watch for details on the Fitness Together Barrington Facebook page or call the studio at 847-304-0505.

Amazing Benefits Of A Strong Core Revealed!

Our family just returned from our annual trip to the Wisconsin Dells.  Usually we just go to the waterparks and arcades and try to relax.  This year our 10 year old son decided he wanted to take up skiing and there just so happened to be a great ski hill at our resort.  The only problem is that our teenagers snowboard and don’t know how to ski and John and I haven’t skiied in over 25 years.  I am not a fan of being outdoors in the winter, so it was up to John to help Connor out.

Let me preface the rest of this story by sharing that John has not been a very active or athletic person most of his life.  He started training at FT about 3 months ago and went from really hating exercise to now needing it and liking it.  If you would have asked me 1 year ago to have him teach Connor how to ski I would have said, “no way”!  He would have for sure been injured or suffered pain for days after.  Well, now after spending 3 months training at FT building endurance and CORE STRENGTH he spent hours skiing and never fell down, suffered no injuries, took no breaks and felt amazing the next day.

Exercise doesn’t just have to be about weight loss, it can be about improving your ability to enjoy life to it’s fullest even as you get older!  CORE STRENGTH and the endurance that comes from a well rounded exercise program will help you with your activities of daily living and even to do things you thought you might never do again.  My husband never thought he would ski again and if he weren’t exercising like he is now, he probably wouldn’t have.

The Workout Shoe Dilemma

Next time you are at the gym look around at the different shoes that people choose to wear.  You will see construction boots, slippers, slip ons, shoes that look and probably are 10 years old and then the occassional brand new pair of shoes appropriate for exercise.

I just want to point out why this is so wrong!  Everybody has a different foot some wide, narrow, high arch, flat foot, feet that turn in and feet that turn out.  The type of shoe that you choose to workout in should be specifically designed for your foot type.  You can seek the advice of your chiropractor about what type of shoe you should be wearing or go to a specialty store and they will analyze the way that you walk, take into consideration your activity and fit you with a shoe that meets your needs.  These shoes are not going to cost you any more that the shoes you pick out on your own.   They can, however, save you alot of problems down the road.  I have seen it many times when clients do not take this advice and end up with knee, foot, back or hip pain.  Yes, your shoe can negatively affect all of those joints when wearing the wrong shoe.

My advice is to spend your money on the right shoe instead of the cute workout outfit and save yourself the hassle of an injury.  One last thing when you do buy those new shoes carry them to the gym and only wear them there.  This will make them last longer and will make the gym managers happy : )

There Is No “Quick Fix” When It Comes To Weight Loss

It turns out Jillian Michaels from my favorite show, Biggest Loser, is being sued because of diet pill claims.  Well, I just want to take this opportunity to remind everyone, if it sounds to good to be true it probably is!  I am constantly hearing about these miracle diets, machines, workouts and pills and people keep buying into them.  The truth is that there is no quick fix, don’t be fooled.  It took time to become unfit, or overweight or just plain unhealthy and it is going to take time to change that.  You are going to have to take control and start exercising and eating right that is all there is to it.  Like this quote from our most recent newsletter states:

“Every human being is the author of his own health or disease.” – Buddha

So it’s not the cookie diet, the ab roller or a pill gauranteed to help you lose weight while sitting on the couch inhaling pizza, it’s YOU!!!

Today is a gorgeous day in Illinois and there is no time like the present, so get out those walking shoes and take a walk enjoy the sun and remember “Today is the first day of the rest of your life”

Keeping the Faith

This story from the book, “The Power of Attitude ” by Mac Anderson inspired me and hope it will inspire you as well.

Even with goals, passion, and purpose in our lives, we’re all faced with adversity…and how we react to adversity will dictate our success or failure.  There are many roadblocks, detours, and potholes along the way.  Sometimes your courage may wane, and your heart may doubt.  You’ll want to quit.  You’ll need all the help you can find to get through these difficult times.
I know because as an entrepreneur, living my dream, I’ve been there.  Some of the greatest inspirations that I draw on during tough times are examples from those who have gone before me.  People who have faced setbacks, and yet had the courage and the strength to persevere…to hang on while the storms blew through.
Persistence kept Walt Disney pursuing his dreams, despite having to declare bankruptcy five times.
Although Helen Keller had every reason in the world to feel sorry for herself, she chose not to.  Her persistence despite overwhelming odds still gives inspiration to millions of people.
The example of Abe Lincoln, however, provides me some of my greatest motivation.  His setbacks were devastating.  He failed in business in 1831.  He was defeated for state legislature in 1832.  He tried another business in ’33.  It Failed.  His fiancé died in ’35.  He had a nervous breakdown in ’36.  In ’43 he ran for Congress and was defeated. He tried again in ’48 and was defeated again.  He tried running for the Senate in ’55.  He lost.  The next year he ran for vice president and lost.  In ’59 he ran for the Senate again and was defeated again.  Finally in 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected the sixteenth president of the United States, and you know the rest of the story.
Recently I visited with Mark Victor Hanson, co-author of Chicken Soup for the Soul.  Mark shared his story of approaching thirty-five different publishers before the thirty-fifth finally said “Yes” and sold seventy-five million copies, making it one of the best selling book series of all time.  Just think, thirty-five people said “No…We don’t want your book.” What if Mark had decided to quit after the nineteenth, twenty-fifth or even the thirty-fourth?  Mark’s unwavering passion for the project gave him the fuel and the courage to persevere.  And as a result hundreds of positive, real life stories have inspired millions of people.
Passion, belief, and self-trust are the fuel for a positive attitude that causes us to be totally committed to a goal.  Giving up is not an option.

Let This Olympic Athlete Inspire You

My favorite athlete in the 2010 winter Olympics is Apolo Anton Ohno.  I will be honest the only reason I know of him is because of his amazing performance on Dancing with the Stars, which he won by the way : )  While he was competing on that program I was inspired by his drive to win and his willingness to work hard.  As the Olympics approach I have learned more about him and his incredible career.  He was raised by a single father and did not even begin skating until 1995, but with his drive to succeed he went on to win his first Gold in 2002.  I have heard he is an early riser just like me and hits his workouts first thing!  I guess what I take away from his story is that you truly can do anything in this life if you just put your mind to it and commit to working hard.  I love the quote on his website:

“I think it’s only the beginning.  This is chapter one.”  Apolo Anton Ohno

So no matter what your goal is or what obstacles you have to conquer, YOU CAN DO IT!

At Fitness Together we love to motivate our clients, help them reach their goals and develop that drive to be the best they can be!  Call us if you are ready for Chapter One…  847-304-0505 or visit us at
